Friends on the Range Free Dance Workshop

Folk School ImagePlease join us Friday, August 4, 2017 for a workshop with Friends on the Range. This group has been teaching contra dancing for decades. They will teach all who attend how to play dance music at a danceable tempo and with a danceable style. We will be using “Pop! Goes the Weasel” as our jig and “Yankee Doodle” for the 2 step. Sheet music, chord symbols, and music stands will be provided. Bowed and plucked instrumentalists alike are welcome and should bring their instrument and some comfortable shoes.

The workshop starts at 5pm and goes till 6pm. Then we will take a break for some food from 6-7pm. As you are able, please bring a dish to pass. Then from 7-8-ish we will have a free dance open to the public. We will get to put into practice our learning from earlier in the evening as we play and dance with friends.

Minnesota State Old Time Fiddle Championship 2017

Hello Fiddlers and Fans of Fiddling- Fiddle Contest Image

Plans are on for the 36th Annual Minnesota State Old Time Fiddle Championships. The contest will take place on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at the Merritt Elementary School Auditorium, located just off Highway 169 in Mountain Iron, MN. As is our custom, the National Old Time Fiddle Association is certifying our Championship division. This means that our Minnesota State Old Time Fiddling Champion is eligible to play at the National Old Time Fiddle Contest in Weiser, Idaho.

This year we are funded in part by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Arrowhead Regional Arts Council, thanks to appropriations from the Minnesota State Legislature’s general and arts and cultural heritage funds, and in part by Natural Harvest Co-op’s Change Within Reach program. With this funding we are glad to be able to offer a FREE dance workshop on Friday, August 4h from 5-8 pm at Merritt School. Friends on the Range will be presenting a workshop on how to play your fiddle tunes in a more dance like style and tempo, how to perform the dance steps and how to call dance moves. All stringed instruments are welcome at the workshop. Our workshop schedule is 5-6 Workshop, 6-7 Dinner, 7-8 Dance. The dance is free and open to the public.

We ask that you pre-register for both the contest and workshop by July 15th, but walk-ons are always welcome. Walk-ons must register between 10:30am and 12:30pm on the day of the contest. There is no entry fee for the fiddle contest, but donations to help defray expenses are welcomed. Help us to spread the word to your musician friends. Click here to register.

The Holiday Inn Express and Suites on Highway 169 across from the school has an indoor pool and serves breakfast. They have 5 motor-home plug-ins available on a first-come-first-serve basis, free of charge. The AmericInn, located nearby on Highway 53, also has an indoor pool and serves breakfast. There is a Perkins and Walmart across the highway from the school.

We look forward to renewing old friendships, making new friends, and celebrating old time fiddling with you in Mountain Iron this August!

Musically yours,

Sheila Wilcox and Holly Weir
